Commissioning a piece begins with an idea. It may be a particular type of furniture, a need within your home, an architectural space that calls for something distinctive, or simply a desire for an object that cannot be found elsewhere.

The first step is an informal conversation about what you have in mind. Helpful information may include how the piece will be used, where it will be placed, its approximate dimensions, preferred woods, and any practical requirements it should address. Photographs of the room, examples of forms or details you appreciate, and a general budget or timeframe can also help establish an initial direction.

From there, I develop the piece as a complete composition—considering proportion, structure, materials, grain, joinery, curves, and details together. The goal is not simply to adapt an existing design, but to create furniture that responds to its purpose, its surroundings, and the people who will live with it.

Before construction begins, we will agree upon the design direction, materials, dimensions, price, and anticipated schedule. Communication continues throughout the process, from the selection of the wood through the final finishing of the piece.

Because each commission is designed and built individually, the process is collaborative but never overwhelming. You do not need to arrive with a finished design. A purpose, a place, or even the beginning of an idea is enough to start the conversation.
